DUCK, N.C. (March 28, 2006) – The Sanderling, the only full-service resort on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, is taking coastal luxury to new heights as it begins its lavish $4 million guestroom renovation. The finalized model room is ready for viewing, and by May 2006, just in time for the busy summer season, all 88 guestrooms and suites will feature the elegant new look, furniture and amenities, and offer an Outer Banks experience unlike any other.
“The Sanderling is already one of the most unique resorts in the country, and this makeover is going to make the guest experience even more exceptional,” said Alan Brand, General Manager at The Sanderling. “With the guestrooms now in step with our AAA Four-Diamond restaurant The Left Bank, The Sanderling Spa, the racquet club and other resort facilities, The Sanderling promises an all-around first-class experience, whether you’re here for a vacation, wedding or conference.”
The Sanderling comprises three inns that will be renovated one by one, allowing the resort to remain open during the entire makeover. The new rooms, designed by Alexander Cook & Company, Inc., an interior design firm in Winston Salem, N.C., will retain The Sanderling’s peaceful beach-side charm while featuring numerous distinctive upgrades.
The Look– The Sanderling lives in harmony with its natural, untamed surroundings, and the new rooms are no different. From the colors to the décor, each room reflects the attributes of the barrier island, incorporating soft shades of blue and natural hues of gray, brown, tan and taupe
that mirror the ever-changing colors of the land and sea. That natural feeling also comes through
in the textures of the new rooms – the crispness of the linens, the smoothness of the silky draperies, the weaved look of the bouclé sofa, the woolliness of the patterned tip-sheered carpet, and the mixing of wood, brushed brass, weathered bronze and pewter. It is a rustic, timeless, seasonless design, one that makes The Sanderling the perfect place to stay any time of year.
The Room – The guestroom décor complements the casual public spaces, which feature working fireplaces, Grainger McKoy sculptures and Audubon prints. A weathered mix of eclectic furniture styles and finishes make each room both comfortable and elegant. All rooms feature custom-made furniture, including dressers with a wax-pine finish and smooth granite top, and wood-working detail derived from the resort’s restored 1899 U.S. Lifesaving Station. Other upgrades include new English-made Osborne & Little draperies, tip-sheered Constantine carpet, and, in the suites, a kitchenette with a microwave, refrigerator, under-counter bar sink and granite countertops. Each room has two Audubon prints of indigenous North Carolina birds. And while the rooms are not beach themed, there are subtle beach accents, including framed shells above the beds and decorative mosaic sea-glass bowls for holding bathroom amenities. The rooms also feature a 32-inch flat-screen TV, wireless internet access and new porch furniture.
The Bed – Luxurious new king-size beds—with Serta Concierge Emerald Pillow Top® mattresses—are a prominent feature of the updated guestrooms. The beds have an upholstered headboard and are dressed with crisp white sheets, a down blanket, a Portuguese matelasse coverlette with windowpane pattern, and a chenille throw blanket. Add to that a mix of comfy down pillows and Euro-shammed standard pillows and you have the ingredients for the perfect night’s rest.
The Bathroom – The bathrooms have been enlarged significantly, with spacious walk-in showers coming to the North and South Inns and large shower tubs to the Main Inn. Accenting the trade-wind blue bathrooms are granite counters, antiqued-bronze light fixtures and beautiful tile detailing. Additionally, each bathroom boasts an original landscape watercolor from North Carolina artist David Doss (limited-edition prints of Doss’ work will be available in The Sanderling gift shop).
