Duck, N.C. (August 5, 2005) — The Sanderling, an exclusive vacation, wedding and
small meetings destination resort nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Currituck
Sound in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, will soon be renovating their 88 guestrooms
and suites. The renovation will begin in December, addressing each one of the three inns
that comprise the resort one-by-one, allowing The Sanderling to remain open during the
entire makeover, which is scheduled for completion in March 2006. A fully renovated
model room will be complete in September 2005 affording guests a look at the new décor
before their return visit next season.
The $3 million renovation project has been awarded to Alexander Cook & Company,
Inc. of Winston Salem, N.C. The interior design firm has transformed spaces in the
corporate, hospitality and municipal markets and also specializes in boutique hotels. Past
projects of note include the Graylyn International Conference Center in Winston-Salem
(www.graylyn.com) and The Vue in Orlando, Florida (www.vueorlando.com).
Designers Lisa Alexander and Kirsten Cook will modernize the resort’s accommodations
and in-room amenities while maintaining The Sanderling’s individuality and beach-side
charm. The bathrooms will be enlarged with new spacious walk-in showers and soaking
tubs, granite counters with under-mount sinks, antiqued bronze finish light fixtures and
beautiful tile detailing. A king-size bed dressed with a plush upholstered headboard, crisp
white sheets and a matelassé coverlet will be a luxurious addition to the new guestroom,
along with a chenille throw blanket and 32-inch flat screen TV. A weathered mix of
eclectic furniture styles and finishes will make each room both comfortable and elegant.
The Sanderling’s new color scheme reflects the resort’s naturally stunning backdrop on
the barrier island incorporating soft shades of sea glass blue and neutral shades of grays,
tans, and taupe that mirror the ever-changing colors of the sand and grasses. The new
guestroom decor will complement the casual public spaces with working fireplaces,
Grainger McKoy sculptures and Audubon prints.
Alexander Cook & Co., Inc is located at 300 South Stratford Road Suite A, in Winston
Salem. Partners Lisa Alexander (sentence about her) Kirsten Cook (sentence about her)

world for 2003, 2004 and 2005 and has been listed on Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List
for seven consecutive years. The resort was ranked 20th out of the top 30 North
American resorts in the Conde Nast Traveler's November 2001 Top 100 Best in the
World Reader's Choice Awards issue. The property has been recognized seven years in a
row by Wine Spectator with the Award of Excellence for its selection of wine programs
that promote food and wine enjoyment.
Additionally, The Sanderling received Santé magazine's “Certificate of Achievement” in
2002 and 2003 for high quality standards in cooking, restaurant wine, and spirits
hospitality. In 2004 the Left Bank captured Santé’s “Grand Award for Culinary
Hospitality Restaurant of the Year” and AAA’s Four-Diamond Rating. Chef George
Robinson’s French-inspired cuisine has recently been featured at the James Beard House.
The resort’s casual dining restaurant offers guests an equally exceptional dining
experience. The Lifesaving Station, located in an actual restored, turn-of-the-century
lifesaving station exudes local charm and flavor in both the decor and cuisine.
The Sanderling Resort, Spa and Conference Center is the most exclusive address and the
only resort located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Nestled between the Atlantic
Ocean and the Currituck Sound, the Sanderling features luxury accommodations and
amenities in a quaint and intimate setting. The serene 12-acre retreat features three
oceanfront inns with 88 luxury guest rooms and suites, four villas containing three and
four-bedroom accommodations, a presidential suite, two restaurants, a full-service spa
and fitness center, and an International Association of Conference Centers (IACC)
certified conference center. Architectural details and furnishings have been carefully
designed to evoke the character of a grand seaside hotel and complement the inimitable
environment of the Outer Banks.
